I came across the Lifetimes project whilst reading Kate Fletcher’s excellent, though slightly academic book Sustainable Fashion & Textiles: Design Journey’s. The largest part of a garment’s environmental footprint is, surprisingly, how it is cared for and disposed of. This project examines how the impact on the earth due to the use and disposal of fashion and textiles can be diminished.
Lifetimes is about the rhythms of time, ecological thinking and the design and use of fashion clothes for women. It is motivated both by necessity and opportunity. Necessity arising out of the increasingly urgent need to embrace more sustainable patterns of production and consumption; and opportunity, of the massive creative potential of working with people, environment and products.
